Pictures To Exe is an inexpensive program (for PC only) that allows you to make a slideshow of your images, including fades and other transitions and background music and/or spoken commentary.

This is fully-functioning but limited to only 10 pictures.  But be warned, it's addictive!

Here is the procedure in outline:

1. Select your pictures - either direct from a digital camera or by scanning prints, slides or negatives.
   

2. Edit your images using Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or a similar program.
   

3. Resize the images to match the resolution of your monitor (typically 1024 x 768 pixels).
   

4. Choose suitable music and/or record your commentary.  
   You will need other software to do this.  Audacity is easy to use and free.  You can download a copy - here
   You need to consider copyright issues.  The best bet is to use Royalty Free Recordings.
   

5. Use Pictures To Exe software to produce the show.
